Free Radicals & Antioxidants

“Totally Radical, Dude!”

If you were a child of the 80s, this might be a phrase you want to forget.  But it might be a good time to talk about radicals…..free radicals, that is.

So what is a free radical and where can they be found?

Free radicals are molecules that contain an unpaired electron which makes them unstable.  In order to become stable, they steal electrons from other atoms which in turn can cause components of our cells to lose their ability to function normally leading to cellular damage and an acceleration of the aging process.  Free radicals are produced by the body and are also found all around us in things like smoke, pollution, smog, and chemicals like tobacco and pesticides.  Other sources can be sunlight, fried/fatty foods, alcohol, and certain drugs or medicines.  Our skin is especially vulnerable to free radical damage.

How can we protect our skin from free radical damage?  Antioxidants are the answer!  Antioxidants
(L-Ascorbic Acid aka Vitamin C) for example, act as free radical “scavengers” to reduce the formation of free radicals and to neutralize them.  They also donate electrons to free radicals before they can damage our cells.  And the best place to find topical antioxidants is with Vivier’s powerful, United States Pharmacopeia (USP) grade, Vitamin C serums.  We have so many serums to choose from, there’s one for every skin type (Normal-Oily, Normal-Dry, Sensitive, Combination), and we even have a special serum formulated specifically for the delicate eye area.  If you haven’t tried them yet, now is the perfect time to find the one that’s right for you.  And did you know that Vivier’s USP grade L-Ascorbic Acid not only protects your skin from free radical damage, it also provides a host of other benefits by calming and brightening the skin, helping the skin retain moisture, and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles….and that is radical.

Until next time!
